Pacific Ave.Alan Kircher, city of Yuma deputy building official, reported Thursday that plans have been submitted for the new Firehouse Subs to be located at 2886 S. 4th Ave.The restaurant will be a tenant in the new building now under construction for Elite Tanning Salon in front of Hastings. One other space is still available in the multitenant building, said Justin Haile, salon owner.At the time the first restaurant opened, it was announced that it would be the first of three Firehouse Subs planned for Yuma and El Centro in the next 18 months by franchise owners Chris Miller and Lisa Meyer. In addition to Firehouse Subs, Miller and Meyer own and operate multiple Buffalo Wild Wings throughout Arizona.By the way, Haile said he's hopeful his new tanning salon will be ready to open by February or March.-- In other building activity, Kircher reported:--Building permits have been issued for construction of a new office for Del Sol Therapy at 2851 S Avenue B, Tuscany Plaza Lot No. 7. Bill DeNise is the general contractor for the new building that will be 2,140 square feet.--A building permit has also been issued for oxygen tank relocation by Yuma Regional Medical Center, another in several "make-way" projects being undertaken by the hospital in preparation for construction of a replacement emergency department.--A permit has been issued for construcion of solar photovoltaic shades at Gila Vista Junior High School, 2245 S. Arizona Ave. It will be a 290 Kw system.--New plans have been submitted by the Vertical Church, 3142 S Arizona Ave., for interior remodeling. The church recently purchased the property where it has been meeting for some time and now plans to expand its capacity.-- In more building activity, construction is underway on a new home for Yuma Truck Driving School on a two-acre lot at 3180 E. 32nd St. (just west of Barney's). The first phase of the project is creating a driving course for training truck drivers, said Joseph Ziemer, the school's regional director of admissions.A second phase will be construction of a new office and classroom facility; for now the school will use an existing building on the site.Ziemer said the project has been in the making since the school first opened in Yuma in 2010. It will enable the school to consolidate its operation, now split between the training course at Arizona Avenue and 40th Street and the office at 4115 E. 32nd St. He's also hopeful the relocation will result in an expansion of the school, which is affiliated with HDS Truck Driving Institute.It's original intent was to train military personnel who were transitioning out of active duty but now also serves unemployed and dislocated workers, seasonal workers and others looking for new careers. Ziemer said there currently is a need for an additional 300,000 truck drivers in the United States.
