Source: San Antonio Express-NewsNov.mini storage 07--SAN ANTONIO -- The ornate New Orleans-style parade float isn't exactly a discreet wallflower. It stands 35 feet long, 9 feet wide and about 12 feet tall. Bathed in bold gold highlights and majestic pink and blue flowers, it was the sweet ride of an ugly king last Fiesta. He affixed his crest to it and left a note for many Fiestas to come:"Donated with love by Larry Benson, Rey Feo LXV, April 2013."So how the not-so-subtle street barge valued at $35,000 disappeared from a building in Leon Valley on Oct. 25, was reported stolen Oct. 26 and then located in a school district's bus barn by Wednesday is equal parts mystery and misunderstanding.Awkward public statements by the principal organizations in the wake of that discovery haven't entirely cleared it up.But before anybody reaches for their confetti guns, let it be known that the stolen -- or abandoned, or lost, or misplaced -- Rey Feo float, removed from the Tricolor Auto Sales building at 6300 Bandera Road, is safe and sound. It was in the possession of the Edgewood Independent School District, whose officials came to realize it wasn't -- as they had been led to believe -- up for grabs because it was about to be scrapped. As did many San Antonians, Edgewood officials heard the Rey Feo Consejo Educational Foundation's all-points bulletin via news outlets Tuesday night that the float had been stolen and a $5,000 reward was being offered for its return.Edgewood spokesman Roland Martinez said in an email that "a foreman at the site where the parade float was being stored" had called the district with an offer of an abandoned float.Martinez did not identify who was called and didn't respond to follow-up questions."Edgewood ISD was told the float was being disposed of and was asked if it wanted the float," the email said. "The district made arrangements to pick up the float Oct. 25."It sent an Edgewood ISD police car to escort it, he said."When the district learned the 儲存loat was reported missing, EISD immediately notified Leon Valley police" Tuesday night, Martinez's email said.It wasn't the first time the float made news.In April, it was ejected from the Battle of Flowers Parade because its occupants were throwing beads and Fiesta medals to eager crowds, a violation of parade rules.Benson, who had the float made in his native New Orleans and transported it here, died suddenly Oct. 28 while traveling in Italy. His funeral Mass was Wednesday. The float, capable of carrying up to 25 people and complete with a large crown atop a gazebo-like structure, soon will be moved to its new home in a Rey Feo Consejo member's commercial building, said Bill Drain of the Consejo. The group had issued a short news release Tuesday afternoon that said the missing float had been reported stolen. Leon Valley Police Chief Randall Wallace said he still hopes to get to the bottom of it, which should take about a week."We're trying to get everyone's statements and figure out what transpired," he said. "There's kind of a question as to how it got to where it was."Wallace would not elaborate on who investigators were interviewing. Calls to the Tricolor Auto Group in San Antonio went unanswered Wednesday. A person reached at the company's headquarters in Dallas did not return calls for further comment.Drain said Benson originally had arranged to store the float at an old car dealership that had been rented to Tricolor, which was in the process of renovating the building when it asked the Rey Feo group to pick it up Oct. 25.Before that could happen, "someone thought it was abandoned and contacted Edgewood," he said. "There's no animosity."Edgewood apparently wasted little time in responding to the offer. Drain thinks it was removed between 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 25.eayala@express-news.netCopyright: ___ (c)2013 the San Antonio Express-News Visit the San Antonio Express-News at .mysanantonio.com Distributed by MCT Information Services迷你倉
